This article is devoted to global indicators – the author collects global indicators that are measured at the global level by various seemingly charitable, non-profit and research organizations in important social, political and economic processes of our lives. But in whose interests are these indicators measured? How are these measurements used – for what decisions? Who finances the work on measuring …?
The abundance and diversity of both global metrics/indicators and institutions/organizations that deal with global measurements is striking. When data on each individual indicator is published periodically and in a disjointed manner, it is a different impression – why not measure some factor? It seems like a very interesting matter, to compare how we do it with how someone else does it. But over time, the understanding comes that a global system of factors is monitored on a global level and on a regular basis – a web of factors that can be manipulated and juggled in any direction. This already contains the intrigue of a great game, or, as one of its ideologists, Zbigniew Brzezinski , said, “the Grand Chessboard”! We can only observe the shadows of this game in the news, but we can, if we want… And there is no need to be naive.
List of global indicators (Global Metrics Watch):
- Doing Business indicator . A ranking of countries with the most attractive regulatory environment for starting and running a business. Since 2003, the World Bank has calculated this indicator based on 10 factors: 1) starting a new business, 2) dealing with construction permits, 3) getting electricity, 4) registering property, 5) getting a loan, 6) protecting investors, 7) paying taxes, 8) trading across borders, 9) enforcing contracts, 10) filing for bankruptcy. Russia — 62nd place in the final ranking for 2015 (May 2014).
- Global House Price Index . The indicators (house prices, house price-to-rent, house-price-to-income ratios) are measured by the International Monetary Fund (IMF ) . Additional macro analysis of the global housing market here .
- Prospects for the development of the world economy, global financial stability – expert qualitative assessments from the IMF. There is less material in Russian, only selected, in comparison with the English version of the site.
- Indicator: Principal Global Indicators . The Principal Global Indicators (PGI) dataset provides internationally comparable data for the Group of 20 economies (G-20) and economies with systemically important financial sectors that are not members of the G-20. The PGI facilitates the monitoring of economic and financial developments for these jurisdictions. Launched in 2009, the PGI website is hosted by the IMF and is a joint undertaking of the Inter-Agency Group of Economic and Financial Statistics (IAG).
- Global Innovation Index . The European business school INSEAD has been developing this indicator since 2007. The index is a derivative of many other global indicators .
- Innovation Index from the Economist Intelligence Unit (a British research company founded in 1946, an analytical division of the British magazine Economist). The Economist Intelligence Unit does not publish its innovation index openly on its website. Paid service.
- Indicator: The Global Competitiveness Index , calculated by the World Economic Forum since 1979. Klaus Schwab, Founder and Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum.
- Index: Global Big Mac Index . The British magazine The Economist, well-known in the West and in liberal circles, monitors the price of this vile burger and publishes an updated index twice a year.
- The Corruption perceptions index has been measured by Transparency International since 1995. Transparency International ranks countries
on a scale from 0 to 100, with zero representing the highest level of perceived corruption and 100 the lowest. This project was launched by Peter Eigen, who left the World Bank, along with 9 colleagues. Don’t forget to click the donate button! Otherwise, this index won’t be measured… - Indicator: The World Giving Index (WGI) is calculated by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF). World Giving Index Report 2013 . Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) is a leading international charity registered in the United Kingdom with nine offices covering six continents.
- Consumer Confidence Index (CCI).
- Indicator: Global Democracy Ranking . The Democracy Ranking is an annual ranking of all democracies (country-based democracies) in the world by focusing on the Quality of Democracy in an international perspective.
- Freedom on the Net Index . The rating is compiled by the human rights organization Freedom House . In 2015, Russia was excluded from the list of countries with a free internet – what a pity, don’t forget to click on the pathetic “donate” button…
- The Global Slavery Index . I saw this in a Helgi Library publication . Of course, there is an interesting organization that measures this on a regular basis – http://www.globalslaveryindex.org/ .
- The Global Terrorism Index is measured by the Institute for Economics and Peace (a non-profit, of course) . This index (GTI) is the first index to systematically rank and compare 162 countries according to the impact of terrorism. The index was discovered via Source .
- The Global Peace Index is measured by an organization (of course, a non-profit one) — The Institute for Economics and Peace . The Global Peace Index ranks 162 nations according to 22 dimensions of peace; the Institute also produces national peace indices giving an in-depth analysis of internal levels of peace. Pay attention to the dashboard of The Global Peace Index — how subtly the line is drawn between the “definitely peacekeeping” policy of the United States and the “terrible, unreasonably aggressive” policy of the Russian Federation. Everything is calculated, all that remains is to believe it… )
- The Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Index . The Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Index measures the set of factors and policies that enable the sustainable development of the Travel & Tourism sector in a country. The index is expressed on a 1 (worst) to 7 (best) scale across 90 indicators, and assesses 141 economies.
- Fed Interest Rate ( Federal Reserve System ). Ratios of interest rates of central banks of countries.
- The Global AgeWatch Index (if you translate the metric’s name literally, not word for word). I found this indicator in a publication by Helgi Library. The Global AgeWatch Index shows that policies supporting people in later life such as pensions, educational and employment opportunities, free healthcare and subsidised transport exist but need to be implemented faster and more systematically.
- Global Healthcare Rankings . Ranking of countries by the effectiveness of their healthcare systems in 2013. The ranking was compiled by Bloomberg analysts based on data from the World Health Organization, the United Nations, and the World Bank. The ranking is based on three key indicators that determine the effectiveness of a country’s healthcare system: average life expectancy at birth, government spending on healthcare as a percentage of GDP per capita, and the cost of medical services per capita.
- The Happy Planet Index is an index that reflects the well-being of people and the state of the environment in different countries around the world. The index was proposed by the New Economics Foundation (NEF) in July 2006. http://www.happyplanetindex.org/
- I suppose that the area of global human rights compliance should have its own global metrics/indicators. Perhaps Human Rights Watch measures all countries with a global human rights compliance indicator. I did not find an explicitly formulated indicator on the site, perhaps they simply provide data to their customers ( by the way, who are the customers? ). There is another wonderful global resource in this area – Amnesty International (registered in England & Wales). Amnesty International has developed a strategy for 2010-2016 . After all, this is so important!
- I assume that Green Peace measures all countries for compliance with environmental standards and requirements , condemns and condemns all who hinder the fight against global environmental threats, this is no joke! I did not find an explicitly formulated indicator on the site, perhaps they simply provide data to their customers ( by the way, who are the customers? ).
- I assume that the International Committee of the Red Cross measures all countries with global indicators in the area of ”war by the rules”, with “obligatory assistance to victims of violence”. I did not find an explicitly formulated indicator on the site, perhaps they simply provide data to their customers ( by the way, who are the customers? and who is John Galt? ).
- The World Wildlife Fund is a noble mission! How everything is interconnected in this world! How much global care from all sides for all living beings of our small planet! The World Wildlife Fund was conceived in April, 1961, and set up shop in September, 1961, at IUCN’s headquarters in Morges, Switzerland. HRH Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands became the organization’s first president. Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands is a person with a big heart, full of care and love, he cares about everything – he fought the Nazis, founded the Bilderberg Club , and fell in love with wildlife. And why do we need the so-called Wildlife Fund in the Russian Federation, if there is the Russian Geographical Society .
